Who publishes this, what may be reused, how the pictures were made, and how to report an error. Everything on this page is short on purpose.
1. Publisher
This site is written, edited and published by a private individual acting in a personal and non professional capacity. It is not a business, it sells nothing, it takes no advertising and it accepts no sponsorship.

2. Rights
- The poems and the prose on this site were written for it, and remain the work of its author.
- Quoting one poem, or a short passage of prose, with the site named as the source, is welcome and needs no permission. Teachers may copy any page for classroom use.
- Reproducing the collection as a whole, or republishing it elsewhere, is not permitted.
- Quotations from Whitman, Melville, Basho and other authors appearing here are taken from works in the public domain, and are identified where they occur.
3. The pictures
The pictures on this site are illustrations produced for it. None of them is a historical photograph, none records a specific person, unit or event, and none should be cited as evidence of anything.
Where a real photograph is discussed in the text, as with the pictures taken at Antietam in September 1862, the discussion is in words and the photograph itself is not reproduced here.
4. Accuracy and corrections
Casualty figures, strengths and death tolls for this war are estimates, and different reputable sources give different numbers. Where two figures are in general circulation, both appear here rather than one. Where a story is remembered rather than documented, the note under it says so.
If you find an error, write to the address above with the page and the correction. Factual corrections are made without argument, and the edition date at the top of every page moves when they are.
5. What this site does not do
- It sets no cookies.
- It runs no analytics and no tracking of any kind.
- It loads no fonts, scripts, images or stylesheets from any other server. Every file the page needs comes from this domain.
- It collects no personal data, because it has nothing to collect it with.
That is not a policy statement; it is a description of the files. The whole site is static HTML and one stylesheet.
